Why the 5-Minute Rule Determines Who Gets the Job

Why the 5-Minute Rule Determines Who Gets the Job

When someone requests a moving quote, they're usually requesting from three or four companies at the same time. That doens’t mean that the best quote wins, instead, it usually means who can respond the fastest.

The numbers to back this up: Studies on lead response time across service industries consistently show the same pattern —> the odds of actually connecting with a lead drop dramatically after the first five minutes, and keep dropping the longer you wait. By the time an hour has passed, most of those leads have already booked with someone else.

Why movers suffer from delayed lead response time: Moving is a high-urgency, high-stakes purchase. What that means is that people are usually working against a deadline (a lease ending, a closing date, a job start date). That urgency cuts both ways: it means a serious lead is ready to book now, but it also means they won't wait around for a callback. It’s much more important to get that initial contact with the person who wants to move, then to ‘get to it later’ or ‘call back when it’s a better time.’

The real cost isn't the lead you lost, it's the ad spend behind it: If you're paying for leads through Google Local Services Ads or any paid channel, a slow response doesn't just cost you the job. It costs you the money you already spent to generate that lead in the first place.

What actually works: The companies that consistently win jobs in competitive markets aren't necessarily the cheapest or the most experienced, but they're the ones who pick up the phone first to get that initial contact. That usually means:

  • Someone (or something —> like the Chamberlain Agent) monitoring every lead source in real time, not checking a shared inbox once an hour
  • A first response that happens in minutes, not ‘after lunch’
  • A follow-up sequence for the leads who don't answer the first call, since most people don't pick up on the first try either

If your current process relies on someone remembering to check leads between jobs, having some reminder in your calendar or in your head, you're likely losing bookings you never even know you lost, they just went to the company that called back first.
